Educational Framework

Students in FCLA will usually attend the school for the second half of their school day (hours 5, 6, 7 and 8) while attending a traditional high school (usually Appleton North) for the first four hours.

In FCLA, students earn credits through classes which utilize interdisciplinary instruction, meaning that they will be able to earn credits in multiple subject areas based on what was taught over the course of a workshop or seminar that they were a part of.

Workshops and seminars change every five weeks and it is the student's decisions which ones they will join. This allows for a student's education to be tailored to them.

Amounts of credits will be determined based on the material covered in a workshop or seminar, and will usually range between 0.125 and 0.250 for each subject area.

FCLA allows students to earn all of their required core credits, with the exception of math credits and 0.5 credits of physical education.

FCLA Personifies the Common Core Standards

Wisconsin adopted the Common Core State Standards as Wisconsin’s mathematics and English language arts standards in 2010. Teachers, content experts, parents, and community leaders all weighed in to help create the Common Core State Standards. The following is from the CCSS document

Students Demonstrate Independence
They become self-directed learners, effectively seeking out and using resources to assist them, including teachers, peers, and print and digital reference materials.

Students Build Strong Content Knowledge
They read purposefully and listen attentively to gain both general knowledge and discipline specific expertise.

Students Respond to the Varying Demands of Audience, Task, Purpose, and Discipline
They appreciate nuances, such as how the composition of an audience should affect tone
when speaking and how the connotations of words affect meaning.

Students Comprehend as Well as Critique
They are engaged and open-minded—but discerning—readers and listeners.

Students Use Technology and Digital Media Strategically and Capably
They are familiar with the strengths and limitations of various technological tools and mediums and can select and use those best suited to their communication goals.

Students Come to Understand Other Perspectives and Cultures
They appreciate that the twenty-first-century classroom and workplace are settings in which people from often widely divergent cultures and who represent diverse experiences and perspectives must learn and work together.

FCLA provides the environment for students to work with these Common Core Standards because of our emphasis on Innovation, Collaboration, and Exploration.
